Dealing with parenting issues after a divorce

On Behalf of | Jan 12, 2017 | Child Custody

When California parents go through a divorce, their children often suffer. How quickly children are able to adapt to a divorce often depends on the actions of parents. Parents do not always act in the best interests of their kids as a result of negative feelings about their ex. However, they should strive to put their own issues to the side for the best results for both them and their children.

One way that people may be able to help make parenting easier for everyone involved following a divorce is to create a written plan that details how issues will be handled. This can help ensure that problems don’t result from people arguing over what was agreed upon since it will be in writing.

Some of the topics that a written agreement may cover include visitation times, what the rules are for children and how discipline is handled and topics related to step-parents or significant others. Visitation times may also include how scheduling changes are arranged as well as when children will see family members of each parent.

Along with determining issues related to parenting time and child custody, people going through a divorce will often have to deal with determining child support. This can be decided through negotiations or in court. If a couple goes through the court system, child support will be decided by a judge based on a formula. As such, the parties may want to meet with their respective family law attorneys in order to see whether an accord can be reached without having to resort to expensive litigation.
