Custody battle continues between Nicole Curtis and ex-boyfriend

On Behalf of | Nov 18, 2016 | Child Custody

HGTV star Nicole Curtis has been in a long custody battle with her ex-boyfriend, Shane Maguire, over their 1-year-old son Harper. Curtis had to get permission from the court to move to California with the child, but she is also responsible for paying Maguire’s airfare for his visits.

The two have been in court since shortly after the child’s birth when Curtis filed a paternity suit to have Maguire recognized as the father. She had sole custody of the child and claimed that although Curtis said he made less than $4,000 weekly, he actually made $20,000. She asked for child care costs, birthing expenses and interim child support. The court awarded her support plus a portion of birthing expenses. From Dec. 26, 2015, Maguire was also given weekend visitation.

Curtis then filed to seal the records on the case, saying she had stalkers, and accusing Harper of being an unfit parent. Maguire countered that there was no evidence of stalking and that Curtis had used social media to build interest in her pregnancy. The move to California followed, and both were ordered not to post Harper’s photo online. Curtis then claimed that Maguire was belligerent and that he did not want to be with Harper on Father’s Day.

One thing parents may want to keep in mind while working out issues around child custody and support is the best interests of the child. While it may be difficult for a parent to give up time with their child, experts agree that children usually benefit from time with both parents. They also may adjust better during a divorce if parents can cooperate. Mediation might help people co-parent more cooperatively.
